Is mercury in silver dental fillings harmful to health?

Silver dental fillings, also known as dental amalgam, have been used for over 150 years. These fillings are a mixture of silver and other metals combined with mercury. The American Dental Association (ADA) states that once the filling is placed in the tooth, the exposure to mercury is minimal and numerous studies have not found a link between silver fillings and any medical disorders. However, some research suggests that these fillings may cause health problems ranging from chronic fatigue to neurological issues like Alzheimer's disease. Critics argue that the ADA has not provided sufficient proof that mercury is harmless and point out that dental amalgam has never been tested for safety by the FDA. Some dentists believe that the mercury vapor released from these fillings during everyday activities like eating and brushing is not harmful, while others disagree and avoid using mercury altogether. The debate continues, with some advocating for the removal of mercury fillings and others cautioning against unnecessary dental procedures.
