### How a Student Gained Control Over Atopic Dermatitis Karen Chen has struggled with atopic dermatitis since childhood, experiencing severe itching and rashes, especially around her joints. Despite trying numerous treatments, including topical steroids, phototherapy, and antihistamines, nothing provided lasting relief. Her condition worsened in high school, affecting her sleep and concentration, and causing her to fall behind academically. Karen's breakthrough came when she learned about dupilumab (Dupixent), a new biologic drug. After a lengthy approval process, she began the treatment and gradually saw significant improvement. It took 6 months to a year for the full effects to manifest, but her eczema became much more manageable. Today, she experiences only occasional flare-ups and is able to lead a more normal life, even pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. While there's no cure for atopic dermatitis, Karen's experience with dupilumab has drastically improved her quality of life, allowing her to focus on her education and future.
