What are the skin conditions associated with hepatitis C?
### Skin Conditions Associated with Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is linked to several skin conditions. Two notable ones are lichen planus and porphyria cutanea tarda.
**Lichen Planus**: This condition causes purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps on the skin. It can also affect the mouth, nails, and scalp. In some cases, lichen planus may worsen during interferon treatment for hepatitis C.
**Porphyria Cutanea Tarda**: This condition leads to blistering of the skin, particularly in areas exposed to the sun. Successful treatment of hepatitis C with interferon therapy can sometimes resolve porphyria cutanea tarda.
People with hepatitis C may also have autoimmune antibodies, such as anti-nuclear antibody, anti-smooth muscle antibodies, and rheumatoid factor. However, true rheumatoid arthritis is uncommon in people with hepatitis C.
