What is dengue fever and how can it be prevented?
### What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a painful and debilitating disease caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. The disease is common in tropical areas and can cause severe flu-like symptoms.
### Symptoms
Symptoms usually begin four to six days after infection and can last up to 10 days. They may include:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Pain behind the eyes
- Joint and muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Skin rash
In severe cases, dengue can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can cause bleeding, liver enlargement, and circulatory system failure. This can progress to dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which can be fatal.
### Diagnosis and Treatment
Doctors can diagnose dengue through a blood test. There is no specific medicine to treat dengue. Patients are advised to use pain relievers with acetaminophen, avoid aspirin, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
### Prevention
The best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites, especially in tropical areas. Here are some tips:
- Use mosquito repellent
- Wear long-sleeved clothing
- Use mosquito nets
- Keep windows and doors closed
- Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed
In 2019, the FDA approved a vaccine called Dengvaxia for adolescents aged 9 to 16 who have already been infected by dengue. However, there is currently no vaccine for the general population.
### Protecting Your Home
If someone in your home gets dengue fever, take extra precautions to protect other family members from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that bite the infected person can spread the virus to others.
