Why is the MMR vaccine important and what diseases does it prevent?
### Importance of the MMR Vaccine
The MMR vaccine is crucial for both children and some adults who have not yet been exposed or vaccinated. It protects against three serious viral diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella.
#### Measles
Measles starts with a fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and a red, pinpoint rash that begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. It can lead to pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), which can cause seizures and brain damage.
#### Mumps
Mumps usually causes swelling in the glands on one or both sides of the face and flu-like symptoms. It can also lead to swollen ovaries or testicles, encephalitis, meningitis, and hearing loss.
#### Rubella
Rubella, also known as German measles, can cause a mild rash on the face, swelling of glands behind the ears, and sometimes swelling of small joints and a low-grade fever. It is particularly dangerous for pregnant women as it can cause miscarriage or congenital disorders such as heart problems, deafness, learning issues, and low birth weight.
### MMR Vaccine Schedule
Children should receive the first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 to 15 months of age and the second dose between 4 to 6 years of age. Adults who are not immune and have not been vaccinated should get two shots 28 days apart.
### Side Effects
Most people experience no side effects, but some may have minor soreness and redness at the injection site. Rarely, a rash may develop 7-11 days after the shot.
### Cost and Availability
The MMR vaccine is usually covered by private health insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. For those without insurance, state health departments or federally funded health centers may provide the vaccine for free or at a low cost.
### Myths and Facts
There is no evidence linking the MMR vaccine to autism. The benefits of the vaccine in preventing serious diseases far outweigh any potential risks.
### New Developments
In 2022, a new version of the MMR vaccine called Priorix was introduced. It offers the same protection and is licensed for children between the ages of 1 and 12.
