How can women improve their cardiovascular health? Encourage them to walk regularly.
Walking for Wellness is a program that encourages women to walk daily or several times a week, either alone or in groups. The program was inspired by Byllye Avery, who noticed many African-American women walking in New York City. Walking is an easy and low-cost way to improve cardiovascular health, requiring only a good pair of shoes. The program has expanded to 25 cities and has helped around 10,000 women. Clinical studies show that African-American women often do not get enough exercise, which can lead to health issues like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Walking for Wellness provides a supportive community where women can discuss their health concerns while walking together. The program also organizes annual walks in various cities to raise awareness about cardiovascular health. The National Black Women's Health Project offers a resource kit with guidelines for forming walking groups and tips on stretching exercises.
