How do you maintain your slim figure?

### My Journey to a Healthier Diet A patient once asked me, “What’s your secret to staying so trim?” The truth is, I wasn’t always this way. About 15 years ago, I was over 20 pounds heavier. This weight gain crept up on me after I finished my medical residency. My metabolism slowed down, and my eating habits needed a change. As a doctor, I realized I needed to learn more about nutrition, not just for myself but for my patients too. I researched various diets, from vegan to Paleo, and found that all evidence-based diets have one thing in common: they eliminate highly processed foods. Highly processed foods, which make up about 60% of the average American diet, are often high in added sugars and refined grains. These foods contribute to many health issues like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. So, I decided to base my diet on real foods and minimize highly processed ones. My diet includes whole foods like full-fat dairy, eggs, and even red meat once or twice a week. I choose higher quality, naturally raised options when possible. I also switched to whole grains like brown rice and whole grain pasta. For snacks, I opt for homemade popcorn, nuts, dates, and nutrition bars with whole food ingredients. I don’t completely avoid high-sugar foods but am selective about them. For example, I’ll enjoy my mom’s homemade chocolate cake but skip store-bought pastries. I also practice mindful eating, paying attention to my food and eating slowly to avoid overeating. My diet is still evolving. I’m always trying new foods and cooking methods, like using an air fryer. The key is to find what works best for you. Here are three steps to help you find your best diet: 1. **Educate Yourself:** Learn about different diets and their benefits. 2. **Experiment:** Try different foods and see how your body responds. 3. **Be Mindful:** Pay attention to what you eat and how much you eat. Finding the best diet is a personal journey, but these steps can guide you in the right direction.
