Is there a link between moderate coffee consumption and reduced risk of anxiety or depression?

### Coffee and Mental Health: What You Need to Know Recent research suggests that drinking two to three cups of coffee per day may be linked to a lower risk of anxiety and depression. This finding comes from a study that analyzed data from over 146,000 people in the United Kingdom. Participants answered questions about their coffee drinking habits and mental health between 2006 and 2010. In 2016, they completed two mental health questionnaires, PHQ-9 and GAD-7, which are commonly used to diagnose anxiety and depression. The study found that people who drank two to three cups of coffee daily had the lowest risk of experiencing anxiety and depression. Those who drank less than this amount also had a reduced risk, but the benefits were most significant for the two to three cup range. Interestingly, drinking more than three cups per day was associated with an increased risk of these mental health issues. About 81% of the study participants were coffee drinkers, with the most common daily intake being two to three cups. The average age of participants was 56 years old, and nearly 57% were women. The researchers concluded that moderate coffee consumption could be part of a healthy lifestyle to help prevent and manage depression and anxiety. However, it's important to note that drinking too much coffee can have the opposite effect. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, help is available.
