What did the analysis of health records reveal about weight loss maintenance after stopping drugs like Wegovy, Saxenda, or Ozempic?

### Weight Loss Maintenance After Stopping Wegovy, Saxenda, or Ozempic A recent analysis of health records by researchers from the electronic health record company Epic has provided new insights into weight loss maintenance after stopping drugs like Wegovy, Saxenda, or Ozempic. These drugs contain active ingredients such as semaglutide and liraglutide, which are used to treat both diabetes and obesity. The study looked at data from over 20,000 people who were prescribed semaglutide and found that about 18% of them regained all the weight they had lost within a year of stopping the drug. However, 56% of the people either maintained their weight loss or continued to lose more weight during the same period. Interestingly, more than one-third of the participants lost at least another pound, and 19% more than doubled their weight loss. Similarly, among the nearly 18,000 people who were prescribed liraglutide, about 19% regained all or more of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping the drug. The proportion of people who maintained or continued to lose weight was similar to those who took semaglutide. The data for this study was collected from 236 health systems using the Epic health record software, covering people whose estimated end date for taking the drugs was between January 2017 and January 2023. Participants had to have a continuous prescription for at least 90 days, followed by a year of no orders for the drugs. These findings suggest that while some people do regain weight after stopping these medications, a significant number are able to maintain or even continue their weight loss.
