Who is Jay Leeuwenburg and what is his connection to diabetes?
Jay Leeuwenburg is a former offensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals who was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes at the age of 12. He is a strong advocate for people with diabetes and has hosted numerous events for children with juvenile diabetes and their families at Indianapolis Colts games. He has also testified before Congress to advocate for more funding for diabetes research and treatment. Leeuwenburg was chosen as an International Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and serves on the board of directors for both the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and its Greater Chicago Chapter. In 1998, he received the DX Award of Excellence for Patient Marketing and Education from the Biomedical Marketing Association.
