What are the surgical options for rheumatoid arthritis affecting the spine?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect the spine, especially the neck (cervical spine). Although rare, some RA patients may need spine surgery. Cervical laminectomy and spinal fusion are two common surgeries. In cervical laminectomy, a surgeon removes part of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. Spinal fusion involves joining two or more vertebrae to prevent painful movements. Surgery is considered when RA treatments fail to relieve symptoms or when there is severe spinal compression. Post-surgery, patients may need physical therapy and may wear a brace.
