What are the symptoms and complications of osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and brittle. This happens when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the removal of old bone. The disease often develops slowly over several years and is usually only diagnosed when a minor fall or sudden impact causes a bone fracture. Common symptoms include back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, and bones that break much more easily than expected. There are several complications associated with osteoporosis, including bone fractures, especially in the hip, spine, or wrist, which can lead to severe pain and disability. In severe cases, even a cough or sneeze can cause a rib fracture or partial collapse of one of the bones in the spine. To manage osteoporosis, doctors recommend a combination of medications, a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and regular weight-bearing exercises to strengthen bones and improve balance.
