What is bone density?

Bone density refers to how strong and dense your bones are. It is measured by a test called a bone density scan. This scan helps doctors understand the health of your bones, specifically whether you are at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition that makes bones weak and more likely to break. If your bone density is low, your doctor may recommend increasing your intake of calcium and vitamin D, doing moderate exercise, and possibly taking medication.
