Why do some experts advise people with ankylosing spondylitis not to see a chiropractor for disease management?
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that causes chronic inflammation in the spine. As the disease progresses, it leads to bones fusing together, increasing pain and stiffness. While there is no cure, certain treatments can slow down the condition and relieve symptoms. Chiropractic care is not usually recommended for treating ankylosing spondylitis because spinal adjustments could unintentionally cause a fracture or dislocation in the neck or spine, especially in the neck area. Additionally, many people with ankylosing spondylitis also have osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Chiropractic treatments could cause harm since you might not even know you have osteoporosis in the early stages, with risks including fractures, spinal cord injury, and paralysis. Research has found little evidence that chiropractic care benefits ankylosing spondylitis patients, and it may actually cause severe harm. Therefore, experts strongly recommend against high-velocity spinal adjustments for patients with fused spines or advanced spinal osteoarthritis. To manage pain, consider other options like physical therapy and discuss suitable treatments with your doctor.
